Niger Republic’s military government says it has terminated a military pact with the United States which allowed the Americans to operate a drone base which has about 700 troops in the northern part of the West African country.

In a late night announcement, the junta spokesperman, Col Amadou Abdramane alleged that a US delegation which was in Niamey earlier in the week and held discussions with junta leaders, had accused Niger of making a secret deal to supply uranium to Iran.

Col Abdramane in the announcement on state TV described the accusation as “cynical” and “reminiscent of the second Iraq war.. “the US presence on the territory of the Republic of Niger is illegal and violates all the constitutional and democratic rules which would require the sovereign people… to be consulted on the installation of a foreign army on its territory,” .

This latest announcement comes as the junta moves closer to Russia and three months after French troops were kicked out of Niger Republic

The U.S uses the base in Agadez to monitor regional jihadist, and State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller said on X, former Twitter, that the US government was aware of the statement, and in touch with the junta and that further updates on the matter will be provided.
