Former Nigerian international, Finidi George has been appointed as Interim Coach of the Super Eagles.

Finidi was in the dug out alongside Jose Peseiro during the 34th Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in Ivory Coast where the Super Eagles finished as runners up. He succeeds the Portuguese who left his role after the competition.

The 52-year-old becomes the fifth player from the 1994 AFCON winning squad to coach the Super Eagles after, late Stephen Keshi, Samson Siasia, Sunday Oliseh and Austin Eguavoen.

Finidi who scored 6 goals in 62 appearances in his 31-year international career will lead the Super Eagles in their friendly matches against rivals, the Black Stars of Ghana and the Eagles of Mali.

The former Ajax Amsterdam, Real Betis and Ipswich town player scored on his debut for the Super Eagles in Nigeria’s 7-1 win against Burkina Faso in the second leg of AFCON 92 qualifier at the National Stadium in Lagos on July 27 1991. His goal in the encounter sealed victory for Nigeria while also making all four assists for goal king Rashidi Yekini.

Finidi who currently is the manager of two-time CAF Champions League winners, Enyimba FC of Aba held his first meeting with team officials earlier on Tuesday, March 19.

Meanwhile, 11 players are already in camp including goal keeper, Stanley Nwabali, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Semi Ajayi.
Four of the 22 invited players have however been ruled out to injury including, Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, Tyrone Ebuhei and Gabriel Osho
