Registration for the National Identification Number, NIN in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State southeast Nigeria, was abruptly halted on Thursday, as staff of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC joined their counterparts across the country to protest what they called deplorable working conditions and poor salary structure.

The action left residents who had traveled from far to be registered stranded in Abakaliki the state capital.

The Security personnel who barricaded the main gate of the office, had a busy day stopping the people from gaining access into the office complex

Speaking to AIT, the Chairman, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Ebonyi NIMC branch, Edene Chukwudi, said the major reason the staff were peotesting was to press home their demand for improved welfare.

Some of those on the enrollment line expressed their frustration; calling on government to reduce the stress on Nigerians.

The Federal Government intensified pressure on NIN enrollment on Nigerians when it announced that all mobile phone SIM cards without a National Identity Number (NIN) from 31st of December, 2020, will be blocked.
