After over fourteen months without a substantive Chief Judge, the Cross River State house of assembly has finally confirmed Justice Akon Ikpeme as the Chief Judge of the State.
Justice Ikpeme made headlines last year when the state legislature twice refused to confirm her appointment when her three-month tenure in acting capacity expired.
This raised numerous eyebrows as being the most senior judge in the state with unblemished records, her confirmation was expected to be a smooth sail.

Unsubstantiated security reasons were initially advanced for her non-confirmation.
Some accused those against her of taking that position because she is originally from Akwa Ibom state and married from Cross River, with some female activists saying she was rejected by those who did not want a female Chief Judge in the state
