A human rights group, Concerned Nigerians have forwarded a petition to the international community in Nigeria to place a visa ban on the governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, and his family members if found guilty of money laundering and acts contrary to the extant code of conduct prohibiting public officers from running private businesses.
The group’s convener, Deji Adeyanju, in a statement said that an online media, the Peoples Gazzete had published the report, accusing the governor of the criminal act.
Adeyanju noted that after the publication, Governor Umahi’s aides threatened the online media for publishing such allegations and said the publication is also attached to the petition forwarded to the international community for proper investigation.
He said the constitution guaranteed immunity conferred on serving governors in Nigeria and had restrained the group from acting on previous reports of looting of public funds by governor Umahi and other governors but the alleged threat following the publication leaves it with no other option but to seek the international community’s intervention.
The Concerned Nigerians group also said that money laundering is a crime against humanity and the bane of all problems plaguing the country and noted that authorities who should be checkmating public officers have failed in the past years thereby increasing the rate of corruption in Nigeria.

The international community include the U.S. and U.K. embassies as well as the European Union, E.U.
