In the wake of recent kidnapping of students at the University of Calabar UNICAL, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi has issued a plea to the Federal Government, emphasising the critical necessity for immediate security enhancement at the institution.

With vast landmass, the University of Calabar in Cross River State, South-South Nigeria has over the years been a target for gunmen to kidnap students and lecturers due to the absence of a perimeter fence and the accessibility to the waterfront which have been exploited by gunmen targeting the institution.

The recent kidnapping incident targeting students residing in a hostel situated near the waterfront has amplified concerns regarding campus safety. The Vice Chancellor in collaboration with the State Commissioner of Police, Gyogon Grimah, conducted an extensive inspection tour of the affected hostel, reaffirming the imperative for robust security infrastructure to safeguard the university community.

Meanwhile, Grimah has assured the public of the State Police Command’s commitment to apprehending the perpetrators and securing the safe release of the abducted students.

The students identified as Precious Ebejin, Ugwu Chukwuemeka, and Damilola Dickson, are from various academic levels within the university.

As the UNICAL community awaits decisive action from authorities, the call for improved security infrastructure resonates as a crucial steps towards safeguarding the lives of students and maintaining conducive academic environment.
