FAO trains local agriculture officials on data collection technology

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is training about 38 persons on the latest data collection technology for agriculture production tracking and information.

The 4-day training workshop is expected to provide participants with the skills to enable them deliver engaging and compelling workshops on Agriculture Production statistics and data collection in their various regions.

The project titled, “Strengthening Institutional Capacity for improved Data and Information Systems for Policy Planning is aimed at tracking the SDGs and food production in Nigeria.

For Zubairu Abdullahi, Director, planning and policy Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development( FMARD), the project will reinforce the competencies of the national MDAs in Nigeria, especially in three States of Kano, Cross River, Lagos States and the Federal Capital Territory to generate, analyse, store and disseminate credible and timely data information.

Abdullahi maintained that collection of data is important to manage resources, track productivity and ensure sustainability.

The training would expose participants to the use of Open Data Sources Kit (ODK), technology as well as cost-free- R -package and python software for data generation and analysis.

The first phase of the training was done in 2020.
