One of Nigeria’s leading opposition political parties, the labour party says it is worried that the federal government continues to allow the international price of crude oil to determine the cost of petrol for local consumption.

At a news conference in Abuja, the party’s leadership said the incessant increase in the prices of petroleum products and electricity tariff are inflicting pains on the citizens and responsible for hike in food prices .

If there is one issue that is a source of worry to labour leaders in the country, it is the unstable prices of the premium motor spirit commonly called petrol. In the last few days, labour leaders had unsuccessful engagements with the government on this issue.

The labour party one of the opposition leaders in Nigeria, which had its root from the labour movement is equally worried that the unstable prices of petrol is inflicting pains on workers and the poor in the society.

The party is worried that Nigeria as a leading oil producer at the global level continue to export crude oil at low prices but import the refined products at a very high cost with unpleasant consequences for the consumers.

The party is asking the government to revamp the existing refineries in the country, build new ones and supply them crude oil to meet local demands at affordable prices.

One other idea being pushed by the party is that every state government should accept a responsibility, desirability of building at least a modular refinery
