The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it has received 9,000 requests for the creation of more polling units across Nigeria, ahead of the 2023 general election.
The INEC Director of Voter Education, Nick Dazang, who gave the information at a training workshop for its staff in Akure, Ondo state capital, said the commission is reviewing its manual for voter education, to cope with modern day realities.
The 2023 general election is two years away and the INEC is activating structures and processes including an upgrade of its voter education manual ahead of the polls.
This is coming at a time of calls by various stakeholders in the country to increase the number of polling units. The move is aimed at discouraging congestion at polling units and reducing voter apathy.

At the workshop in Akure, officials of the INEC confirmed receipt of over 9, 000 requests for the creation of more polling units across the country.
They said the Commission has begun drive for aggressive voter education, with the overall goal of reducing voter apathy, which always mar elections in the county.
The INEC Director of voter education said the Commission will explore the advantages of social media to increase voter participation in subsequent elections in Nigeria.
Participants at the workshop were drawn from South-West, South-East, and South-South states of the country.
