Bayelsa State Governor,Douye Diri has directed that the forest guards in the state be fortified and deployed to the local council areas so as to protect the local forests from harmful activities In pursuance to protecting and preserving forests and habitats from going extinct.
Governor Douye Diri who spoke at an event marking the 2021 international day of forests also requested that an executive bill be sent to the state house of Assembly to strengthen policies addressing current realities as regards forests.

Governor Diri said the directive became necessary following what he described worrying statistics by the United Nations Organisation which showed Nigeria has lost about an elevated pace of 35.7 percent of its timberland spread to deforestation.
The activities of deforestation in the local forests has led increasing heat intensities, flooding, desertification and depletion of the ozone layer with several health harzards on humans.
Governor Douye Diri also emphasised on the need for Bio-diversification and support of the ecosystem just as seedlings were distributed to farmers as they watch the Bayelsa State Chief Executive kick start the tree planting exercise at the peace park.
The theme of this years international day of Forests is “Forest Restoration, A path to recovery and well-being”.
