Farmers advised to harness mango production for international market

Farmers in the country have been told to take the advantage of the recently released fifty billion naira, for export expansion facility programme, which would focus on driving economic growth through exports.

The Permanent Secretary in the federal Ministry of trade and investment, Dr Nasir Sani- Gwarzo, made the call in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, at a one day sensitisation workshop on Proper Harvesting, Processing, Packaging of Mango and Mango Products for local and international markets’

Both Gwarzo and the CEO, Nigeria Export Promotion Council, Olusegun Awolowo who were represented, said that Nigeria has comparative advantage in the production of quality mangoes, hence the need for capacity building

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO statistics, Nigeria produced about 800,000 metric tons of mango annually, contributing about 3 per cent to the world total production.

To further enhanced this competitiveness of Nigeria’s agric commodities for domestic and international markets, the one-day workshop was organised to educate stakeholders along the Mango value chain.

Other speakers also emphasised on the need to improve on Mango products to make it more competitive.

The workshop was attended by stakeholders in the Mango value chain across the six states in the southwest.
