The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, in collaboration with other stakeholders, is to establish a gas power plant in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Group Managing Director, GMD, of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mele Kyari, who made this known in Maiduguri, during a courtesy call on Governor Babagana Zulum, said the idea is to address the problem of power supply in the state.

Mele Kyari also told the Borno State Governor that the power plant will be ready between 3-4 months ,stressing that all the stakeholders involved, including the gas supplier, and power distribution company would deliver as and when due.

“We are seeing a very short time frame; between three to four months, we should be able to put up a power plant that will serve Borno,” Kyari said.

Mele also noted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, had declared this decade, a decade of gas, meaning that within the next 10 years, there would be significant gas entry, into the domestic market.

He said that, they would work with the Borno State government, to make sure that the infrastructure is put in place, for the smooth delivery of power, and the recovery of costs.

Governor Zulum lauded the NNPC’s intervention, which he said, would be a big relief to the people of Borno.

Zulum said, the NNPC and its subsidiaries had on several occasions, rendered humanitarian support to the state, citing the establishment of a 250-bed capacity, infectious disease hospital, as one of such support.

“Today’s event will change the narrative in our state, as power is very essential in reducing the magnitude of poverty, caused by insurgency in the state,” Zulum said.

While assuring of his administration’s support for the programme, tagged, “Maiduguri and Environs, Emergency Power Stabilisation and Improvement Project,” Zulum said, the Yola Electricity Distribution Company, has the infrastructure on the ground, to link up, and supply the people with power from the plant, when completed.
