Borno State confirms 360,000 Malaria cases in 2020; scales up intervention

Borno State government has confirmed that nearly 360,000 were treated of Malaria in 2020 with 370 deaths.

The State reported that the figure for 2019 was slightly more than 330,000 with 240 deaths, while in 2018 there were about 238,000 confirmed malaria cases, with 110 deaths.

The Chief of Staff to Borno Governor, who doubles as Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Isa Hussaini Marte, said this at the commemoration of the 2021 World Malaria Day, in Maiduguri.

The Commissioner also put the figures for 2017 at roughly 144,000 with 231 deaths.

He added that Borno State has had 4 rounds of uninterrupted Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention intervention, between 2017 and 2020, where over 2 million children between 3 months to 5 years of age were reached each year.

Borno State has also witnessed uninterrupted supply of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets, donated to pregnant women, children under 5 during immunisation, and to newly resettled communities, across the state.

The State Government is currently finalizing plans, for a 10-year scale-up of all malaria interventions, across the state, through soft credit support, from the World Bank, effective, this year.


The Health Commissioner also spoke on the anticipated malaria vaccine.

The Borno State government said it will continue to count on the teamwork, technical and financial support, of the various implementing partners.
