Former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and a former Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-akoko, Ondo State, Professor Femi Mimiko have called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to consider devolution of some Federal Government’s powers to the states as a way to deal with the rising spate of Insecurity in the country.
The duo made the call at the maiden edition of a quarterly programme of the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
They canvassed for the amendment of the nation’s constitution to pave the way for true federalism that would ensure that states take total control of their territories.
Speaking on the theme; “Appraisal of State of Security in Nigeria, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; The Way Forward’ the former governor said the constitution as being operated cannot guarantee the security of citizens and economic development of the country.
He described the country’s security situation as appalling, to the extent that the government is at a loss at what to do about it.

Oyinlola argued that once states are in total control of their territories, insecurity, economic and other challenges will be better handled.
In his address, Professor Mimiko said it was obvious that the country is overwhelmed by the myriad of security challenges and the Government has not shown the political will needed to surmount them.
He too, advocated for the restructuring of Nigeria describing it as a panacea to the nation’s challenges, adding that there is a considerable lack of trust between the government and the governed.
