International Museum Day:150 minority languages in Nigeria faces extinction

About 400 minority languages in Nigeria are said to be endangered, and about 150 of them are on the verge of extinction.

A trend attributed to globalization and other factors following a survey conducted recently.

According to some experts, It is necessary to reverse this trend and safeguard other aspects of minority tribes as Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark international museum day on 18th May 2021.

Different cultural groups from the 17local government areas of Plateau State were on the ground to thrill visitors and guests with their dresses, local food, music, and dance steps.

Ait.live carried out a simple test on the old and young at the museum, they were asked to say the Moto of the Africa independent television in their mother tongue.

While the older respondents had no problem with it, the younger folks struggled.

This year’s international museums day which had a minority ethnic group in Plateau State as hosts hope to create cultural awareness.

The Director-General of the National Museums and Monuments commission, Alex Attah, used the occasion to give an update of efforts to recover artifacts stolen from the country.
