World Albinism Day: Osinbajo calls for focus on empowering albinos

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says it is necessary as a people to have conversations around the safety and employment of citizens living with Albinism.

Yemi Osinbajo made the call at a virtual event, on Sunday to mark the World Albinism Day themed: “Strength Beyond All Odds”.

The vice president noted the need to see Albinism for what it is, a genetic difference not a contagious disease or a public health problem.” and there must be aggressiveness in counter-narratives to the socio-cultural misconceptions and superstition about albinism.

Secondly, Osinbajo says interventions made “must be designed to improve the lives of people living with Albinism and deliberate steps should be taken as private individuals and public servants to give them equal opportunity in the workplace and in social settings as well.

He commended the convener of the event, Jake Eppele, who he said is one of the most eloquent and influential spokespersons for the rights, protection, and welfare of albinos in Nigeria and the world over.

The virtual event, was attended by the American Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, among other diplomats and distinguished personalities.
