Organised labour in Nigeria has rejected a N48,000 minimum wage proposal by the federal government and N54,000 of the organised private sector.

The organised labour had stormed out of a scheduled meeting of the 37-man minimum wage committee, accusing the government of unseriousness as even the minister of state for Labour was not present.

It was supposed to be a meeting to decide on a new national living wage as demanded by organised labour, but that was not to be as the federal government’s N48,000 proposal forces the workers’ representatives out of the meeting.

Back at the Labour House, the Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero and the deputy president of the Trade Union Congress, Tommy Etim, told the media that a N54 000 proposal of organised private sector is also rejected, insisting on N615.000

Labour is also accusing the Nigeria Governors Forum for paying lip service to workers’ welfare

At the moment, organised labour says its May 31 ultimatum for the implementation of a new national minimum wage stands.
