The history and rich cultural heritage of the Izon people were displayed at the 2021 edition of the great Efi lake fishing and cultural festival in Sabagreia, kolokuma/Opokuma Council area of Bayelsa State.
The cultural heritage drew dignitaries across Bayelsa and other neighbouring States, including Governor Douye Diri who directed the inclusion of the festival into the state cultural calender to attract economic benefits to the state.
Great Efi lake is located within Sabagreia community.


The cultural festival is celebrated by the people in appreciation for a bountiful fishing harvest.

Great Efi lake festival is marked quarterly and was last celebrated in 2017, creating an array of excitement among the people in this years edition.
The event is usually a 3-day activity; attracting individuals across states in the country to do their fish purchases.
Governor Douye Diri led other government dignitaries to celebrate this years edition.
Overwhelmed with the cultural potentials, he believes if fully tapped can boost the state’s economy.
Highlights was the participation of Governor Douye Diri in the fishing contest with him momentarily celebrating his catch.
With the next edition expected in 2025, it is hoped that the excitement will be greater than the previous ones.
