36 House of Assembly Speakers Urge Pres. Tinubu To Tackle Economic Hardship, Back State Police

The Conference of speakers of state Legislatures has called on President Bola Tinubu to quickly address all the factors that have triggered the current economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians.

The Speakers made the call in Abuja at the Conference of Speakers of State Legislature comprising the 36 states of Nigeria.

The meeting was attended by Twenty-Nine Speakers who deliberated on a wide range of issues bothering on good governance in Nigeria.

The communique issued at the end of the meeting signed by the chairman of the Conference and Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin raised concerns over the fallen value of the naira and requested the monetary and fiscal authorities to find appropriate solutions to the challenges.

The meeting emphasised that the hardship being faced by Nigerians was as a result of the exchange rate, removal of fuel subsidy and security challenges bedeviling the country.

They urged the federal government to initiate sustainable policies with equal measure of courage to ameliorate the sufferings of the people.

On the financial autonomy to State Legislatures, the Speakers observed that inspite of the constitutional provisions, the implementation has been breached and called on those concerned to comply with the provisions of the Constitution.

The State of Insecurity in parts of Nigeria was also a source of concern to the the State Lawmakers and to this end, strongly advocate for state policing to check the negative trend of Insecurity.

They appealed to the National Assembly, Presidency and other relevant Stakeholders to leverage on the ongoing Constitution review exercise.

On the Crisis in Rivers State House of Assembly whose Speaker was conspicuously absent at the meeting, the Conference appeals to political leaders in the State to explore peaceful means to resolve the impasse between the State Legislative and Executive Arms of government.
