Senate Foot drags on assault allegation against CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar

Four- months after receiving the petition for alleged assault against the Chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar, the Senate seems to be foot-dragging with the case slowly going cold.

Twenty-one year old Security guard in Abuja, Clement Sargwak had in search of justice petitioned the Senate.

Video clips of the alleged assault by the Code of Conduct Tribunal chairman had gone viral; provoking a huge public outcry against him.

Many months after there is a growing concern that there is an attempt by the Senate Panel to sweep the matter under the carpet.

AIT gathered that the CCT Chairman had reached out to the Akinyelure-led committee to provide him soft landing Landing.

A source said the committee advised the embattled CCT Chairman to provide financial compensation to the young man he allegedly assaulted.

Umar’ first and only appearance before the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges headed by Senator Ayo Akinyelure was two months ago when he pleaded for one week to properly study the petition leveled against him.

The Senate panel granted his request when it asked that Umar should return two weeks after.

Umar has since then failed to show up and instead asked his lawyer to represent him on the excuse that he had travel abroad for medical check up.

Speaking to AIT, Counsels for the victim, said want they want for their client goes beyond financial compensation. They want justice to serve as a deterrent to other privileged public office holders to learn to comport themselves in public space.

The dilly-dally on the matter by the Senate Panel has however continued to fuel speculations that the matter has been withdrawn.

All efforts to reach the Senate Committee Chairman to confirm the veracity or otherwise proved abortive.

In the meantime, the petitioner must continue to leave with the trauma he suffered from the incident; hoping that justice will come much sooner rather than later.
