The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) is pleased to announce the issuance of a service-wide circular by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), H.E. Senator George Akume, CON, mandating all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to comply with the National Accessibility Regulations. This directive marks a significant step forward in ensuring inclusivity and equal access for persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
The circular mandates all MDAs to implement necessary measures to enhance accessibility, enabling persons with disabilities to access public services, facilities, and opportunities without barriers. This initiative underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
In a related development, NCPWD, in collaboration with Qualitative magazine and supported by the Leprosy Mission Nigeria, recently launched the sign language version of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018. This initiative aims to make the act more accessible to the Deaf community, empowering them to understand and assert their rights. Initially an audio version was launched for the visually impaired.
The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities calls on all MDAs to fully comply with the SGF’s directive and work collaboratively to create an inclusive environment for persons with disabilities. This compliance will be pivotal in dismantling barriers to accessibility and fostering a society where everyone, irrespective of their abilities, can thrive.
We also encourage all stakeholders, including development partners and advocacy groups, to continue supporting these initiatives to ensure widespread awareness and implementation.
