Nigeria are in danger of not qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, after a 1-1 draw with South Africa on Friday night.

It is their third consecutive draw in the series.

The Super Eagles needed a win to go top of Group C, but conceded the first goal in the game.

Bafana Bafana attacker, Themba Zwane was allowed a free space into the box and fire past Stanley Nwabali.

Finidi George’s men equalized early in the second half, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scoring his first goal for Nigeria.

Finidi said his side were sloppy at the beginning of the game.

“We started sloppily in the first half, we took over the game immediately, we scored in the second half,” Finidi told reporters after the game.

“We missed several chances, overall it was not a bad second half for us. The players reacted well in the second half, but it was not the best result we wanted, we have to get our heads up and work for the next game.I am not happy about the point.”

The result leaves the Eagles in fifth place with three points, while South Africa are fourth with four points.

The Super Eagles will now take on Benin Republic at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan on Monday.
