For about eighteen years, Nigerians celebrated Democracy Day on May 29. That however changed when former President Muhammadu Buhari on June 6th, 2019 directed that Nigeria’s Democracy Day should be marked on June 12 to honour late Moshood Abiola, the winner of the 1992 presidential election.
As Nigeria marks twenty five years of uninterrupted democracy, some Port Harcourt residents, say the nation can only celebrate the longevity of democracy but certainly not achievements in terms of infrastructural development and human capital development.

They used the occasion of this year’s democracy day to call on the political class to reflect on the sacrifices made by the founding fathers to unite the country as they also reminded the electorate to have a change of attitude towards selling their votes.
They also charged president Bola Tinubu to come up with policies that would address the high cost living that Nigerians are grappling with.
