The Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar has been described as a veritable tool to effectively educate the Nigerian youth and social media handlers, on the responsible use of the social media to collectively enhance national security, unity, harmony, and economic development in the country.

The General Officer Commanding, (GOC), 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, who doubles as the Commander of Special Joint Taskforce Northwest Operation Hadarin Daji, Major General Godwin Mutkut, told the participants that the dissemination of dangerous and divisive messages is detrimental to social harmony.

It is the 34th Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar held in Gusau, with participants drawn from the social media handlers and mainstream media across Zamfara State.

According to the Nigerian Army, the essence of the seminar is to enlighten and sensitise the Nigerian youth and social media handlers on the power of the responsible use of social media, to assist in promoting and enhancing national security, peace, and economic growth in Zamfara State in particular, and the country at large.

The General Officer Commanding, (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Sokoto, Major General Godwin Mutkut, called on the people to work hand in hand with the Nigerian Army, to collectively build a future where peace reigns, and progress flourishes in the country.

The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Nigerian Army Headquarters, Abuja, Major General Nosakhare Ugbo, urged social media handlers to understand that each post, each share, and each comment on social media has the potential to undermine or strengthen the collective efforts towards a peaceful and united Nigeria, hence the need to use social media responsibly, and ensure their digital footprints leave indelible marks of peace and love for mankind.

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Musa Shinkafi, stressed the need for social media handlers to always verify their contents before posting or sharing, to avoid escalating conflict or damaging an individual’s reputation.

The 34th Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar has as its theme: “Enhancing National Security Through the Responsible Use of Social Media.”
