The former Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Sule Katagum has called for increased support and awareness for individuals living with sickle cell disease.

Katagum made the appeal during an event to commemorate the 2024 World Sickle Cell Day, organised by the Amana Sickle Cell Foundation at Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The ex Deputy Governor emphasized the need for improved healthcare services, genetic counseling, and social support to enhance the quality of life for survivors.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by individuals and families affected by the disease, stressing the importance of collective efforts to address the burden.

He said the initiatives will strengthen healthcare infrastructure, provide access to medication, and promote public awareness campaigns.

Sule Katagum encouraged community engagement, education, and research collaborations in order to combat the genetic disorder, towards improving the lives of sickle cell survivors and their families by ensuring equal opportunities and inclusive development.

The World Sickle Cell Day is observed every June 19th annually, aimed at raising global awareness and actions against the disease.
