The chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the National Union of local government employees, NULGE, Clifford Paul alongside the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC,Trade Union Congress, TUC , have given security operatives in Rivers State a seventy two hour ultimatum to vacate local government premises to enable workers access their offices
The Labour leaders at a press conference in PortHarcourt, wondered why the Nigerian police personnel barricaded some local government councils’ secretariats since monday, locking out workers and the newly inaugurated caretaker committees from accessing their offices
Following the continuous barricading of some local government area secretariats in rivers state by men of the Nigerian police force , preventing the newly sworn in Caretaker Committees and council workers from accessing their offices,the leadership of Organized labour unions in the state,Friday evening issued a three day ultimatum to the inspector general of police, Kayode Egbetokun to immediately order the commissioner of police, Olatunji Disu and his men to vacate the council headquarters and allow workers access to their offices.
While the labour leaders say they will not fold their hands and watch the nigerian police undermine the nation’s constitution in the name of political patronage, urged president Bola Tinubu to call the outgone local government chairmen loyal to the minister of the federal capital territory FCT Nyesom Wike to order.
The labour leaders vowed to resist any act that would truncate the peace being enjoyed in the state by some persons,including the outgone Council chairmen,who rely on a resolution passed by former lawmakers to elongate their tenure in office after serving their three year tenures.
