Kano state government is set to approach the state House of Assembly towards making new laws aimed at preventing deforestation and strengthening existing laws with enforceable mandates.
Project coordinator of the state’s Agro-climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, ACReSAL, Dahiru Hashim said this at the launch of an initiative aimed at planting of three million trees across Kano State.
Research has shown that indiscriminate cutting of trees for cooking, logging of wood for industrial purposes and other unhealthy environmental practices leads to high carbon emissions, resulting to climate-induced crises such as drought, and desertification, a challenge Kano state government is addressing with the flag of the planting of three million tree- across the state.
However, the Project coordinator for Acresal Kano State, Dahiru Hashim at the launch of the initiatives says there is the need to make new laws or strengthen existing ones to prevent indiscriminate felling of trees.
