Nothing other than a coach with reputation and pedigree in the African terrain would be good enough for Nigeria.
That is the submission of the nation’s Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, who has tasked the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to employ a coach who has a track record of success to lead the Super Eagles.
Emphasizing the importance of having a coach with a reputable history in African football, Senator Enoh highlighted the need for a coach who understands the unique dynamics of the continent’s football landscape.
In a statement pushed out by his SA Media Diana-Mary Nsan Senator Enoh said “the Super Eagles need someone who can propel them towards winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and ensure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.”
He underscored the urgency and significance of the appointment, stressing that the incoming coach must not only bring tactical expertise but also possess a deep understanding of African football and its challenges.
“The terrain of African football requires a specific type of knowledge and experience. We need a coach who has a proven capability in this environment and can bring out the best in our players,” he added.
Owan Enoh also stressed the tremendous support the NFF has received from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, reinforcing the government’s commitment to elevating Nigerian football on the global stage.
“Our goal is clear – we want the Super Eagles and other national teams to excel and bring glory to our nation. The right coach will be instrumental in achieving this,” he maintained.
The Minister concluded by urging the NFF to expedite the selection process and ensure that the new coach is in place well ahead of the upcoming assignments.
The Nigeria Football Federation had about a week ago announced resolve to higher a top grade foreign expatriate coach to lead the technical crew of the Super Eagles.
This came in the wake of horrendous performances that saw Nigeria lose 2-1 to Benin Republic after a 1-1 home draw against South Africa to leave them living dangerously in the qualifying race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision to get the services of a new foreign coach also led to the resignation of former international Finidi George from the role.
