The United Nations Children’s Fund, Unicef has promised to commit over N480 million to support women and children, access free healthcare services in Zamfara State, North-West Nigeria.
Unicef Chief of the Sokoto Field Office, Michael Juma, disclosed this during a three-day formal opening of Unicef interaction with Zamfara State Government officials on the state’s 10-year Strategic Plan.
Stakeholders believe that the three-day would help the Governor Dauda Lawal-led administration achieve results, in its efforts to engender sustainable development in Zamfara State in social, economic, and environmental areas.

Juma said the Fund is ready to develop an accountability, monitoring and evaluation framework, to help key officers in managing the strategic plan, track progress, pledging to support the State Government, to enhance the competitiveness of staff, on reporting and budgeting, to help Governor Lawal, know where the resources are going, the results achieved, and how it would turn around the lives of the people.
The Governor commended Unicef for its support, and described the 10-year strategic plan, drafted by the Fund, as a roadmap to guide his administration in addressing challenges, and achieving development goals.
Unicef said it is working to ensure children in Zamfara State have access to quality and inclusive education, with particular emphasis on out-of-school children, to enrol them in schools, to acquire appropriate quality education, to help them realise their full potentials, when they grow up.
