Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria says the State government was studying the recent judgement of the Supreme Court which granted financial autonomy to Local Government Areas of the country.

Nwifuru was speaking on Saturday shortly after casting his ballot at the Edukwu Okemini polling unit of Ofuruekpe in Izzi Local Government Area, for the local council elections in Ebonyi State.

The Governor assures citizens that his administration will continue to uphold democratically elected governance system at the Local Government Area levels in Ebonyi State.

Elsewhere, eligible voters across the thirteen Local Government councils trooped out to exercise their franchise in the election of Council Chairmen and Councillors, though the turn out was generally poor.

ait.live Chidi Nmeregini who monitored the exercise in parts of the State reports that despite the morning downpour, most polling stations opened before 9:00am to underscore the preparations made by the State electoral body.

But, voters were few and no where to be seen.

No opposition candidate or Party was on the ballot, and none of their agents and representatives were spotted within the election areas across the State.

At the close of polls and collations, the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission has declared the Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, winners of Saturday’s LGA elections in the Council areas where results have so far been declared.

Elections into the 13 LGAs and 171 wards in Ebonyi State were last conducted in 2022, under a two-year tenure system.
