In a significant stride towards enhancing the lives of persons with disabilities in Nigeria, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Dr. James David Lalu, PhD, npom, hosted a productive meeting with Mr. Peter Mbuguah, Managing Director of Motivation Charitable Trust (MCT), from Kenya. The discussion focused on the potential for local production of assistive technology devices in Nigeria, including wheelchairs and crutches.

Dr. Lalu expressed his unwavering commitment to improving accessibility for persons with disabilities through the local manufacturing of assistive devices. He emphasized the importance of establishing a factory in Nigeria to provide a wide range of high-quality, size-appropriate options tailored to the needs of the local population. “Local production will not only ensure the availability of diverse choices but also significantly reduce costs and improve accessibility for our community,” said Dr. Lalu.

The Executive Secretary highlighted the NCPWD’s readiness to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MCT to facilitate this initiative. The discussion covered key aspects such as the multi-principal program for training, production logistics, and distribution strategies.

Mr. Peter Mbuguah shared insights into MCT’s extensive global initiatives, underscoring the importance of maintaining high standards in local production. He discussed the crucial elements of technology transfer, quality assurance, and a cohesive business model that would drive the success of the project. “Our goal is to ensure that local production meets international standards without compromising quality,” Mr. Mbuguah stated.

Both parties agreed on the necessity of further discussions to finalize the MoU, including details on sample collection, pricing, and a planned visit to Nairobi for in-depth planning and training sessions.

Motivation Charitable Trust, since its inception in 1991, has been a pioneer in wheelchair design and provision. Renowned for its user-centered design, MCT collaborates with governments and international NGOs to meet the growing needs of wheelchair users, particularly in developing countries. Their commitment to high-quality, locally repairable, and adjustable wheelchairs has transformed lives globally. MCT’s training programs, developed in partnership with the World Health Organization, are vital for safe and effective wheelchair provision.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for the NCPWD and underscores its dedication to improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
