U.S President, Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris

United States Vice President, Kamala Harris says she will work to earn the nomination of the Democratic Party at next month’s convention in Chicago following her endorsement by President Joe Biden who stepped down from his re-election bid ahead of November polls.

Biden’s decision to bow out opens the race for the November’s election. Harris, who is the country’s first female vice president, would become the first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to become a major-party nominee.

She said in a statement following Biden’s endorsement: “I am honoured to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,”.

The 60-year-old added “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party and unite our nation to defeat Donald Trump”.

Some Democratic leaders have come out to endorse Harris as Biden’s replacement. Former President, Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary who lost to Donald Trump in 2016, have lend their support.

Former President, Barack Obama and former House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi have praised Biden for stepping back but stopped short of endorsing Harris.
