President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged social media users to exercise decorum in their online conduct.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio emphasised that social media users should respect people’s privacy and avoid causing harm to families.
He noted that while the Senate values democracy and free speech, social media activities should be done with decorum.
Akpabio shared a personal experience where his wife received over 2,000 calls after a comment he made about the Senate not being a nightclub was misconstrued on social media.
He stated that his phone number and his wife’s were published online, leading to a flood of calls that crashed his phone.
Akpabio clarified that the communication was misunderstood and led to private abuses on social media, which he did not deserve.
He reaffirmed his respect for women, stating that he has only one wife, whom he cherishes and is comfortable with.
He stated that as a father of four daughters, he prays for the upliftment of the girl-child to the highest level in life
