In a bold move to re-establish Cross River State as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports, Governor Bassey Otu has commenced the transformation of the U.J. Esuene Stadium Hostel.
The project is set to turn the facility into the Calabar Sports Resort and Leisure Hotel, aiming to blend luxury with functionality for athletes and visitors alike.
Governor Bassey Otu during the groundbreaking ceremony, spoke passionately about the state’s rich sporting heritage, reminding everyone international stars that once represented Cross River State.

He stressed that the remodeling project was not just about infrastructure but also about reigniting the state’s sports culture, and transform it into an economically empowering venture.
Project consultant, Sanjay Oscar, explained that the new 72-room International Sports Hotel and Resort would address a critical need for athletes’ accommodation, and position Cross River as a prime location for hosting sports events.
The project expected to be completed in December 2024, is being funded through a collaborative effort.
