The Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, has approved the sum of ten billion Naira to address the outstanding gratuities payment for retired civil and public servants in the state.
This comes as the current administration inherited a backlog of unpaid gratuities dating back to 2014.
The payment, which was promised last year, faced delays due to necessary audit and verification steps.
The audit and verification exercise has so far identified and removed over 2,000 ghost pensioners, from both the State and Local Government pensions payrolls.

In line with this, the Governor has constituted a committee comprising executives from the State and Local Government Pension Unions under the leadership of the Secretary to the State Government, Anthony Owan-Enoh.
The committee is scheduled to meet on Monday, 29th July, 2024, to develop the modalities for the payment of gratuities to the retirees.
