FG completes 30-year-old New Bussa water works in Niger State

The Federal Government through the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, HYPPADEC, has completed and inaugurated the rehabilitation and expansion of the New Bussa Water Works in Borgu Kingdom of Niger State, 30 years after the project was initiated in 1994.

The Federal Government also undertook the construction of a one million cubic metres reservoir tank and provision of 11 KVA transformer for booster stations expected to serve 60,000 households.

For about 30 years, residents of Borgu Local Government Area and its environs have grappled with the challenge of accessing potable water due to the breakdown of the water works serving the area.

The water scheme which is courtesy of HYPPADEC in collaboration with the State Government is said to be in fulfilment of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu aimed at improving the quality of lives through access to potable water supply and socio-economic development.

The inauguration of the totally overhauled water scheme is a dream come true and an end to the perennial water shortage expected to boost public health and reduce the incidents of waterborne diseases.

The N2.1 billion water project is a state-of-the-art water treatment and distribution system equipped with a modern laboratory facility for regular quality checks, chemicals and staff quarters, operational vehicles and motorcycles.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume represented by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said the project is a demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to sustainable development aimed at improving the quality of lives of the citizenry.

Governor Umar Bago represented by the Commissioner for Works, Suleiman Umar said the water scheme which aligns with his administration’s resolve to resuscitate the water sector across the state will be maintained and sustained.

Managing Director of the Commission, Abubakar-Sadiq Yelwa, said the target of the rehabilitated water works is not only an infrastructure upgrade but also a transformation in the quality of life for the people of the historic town and its environs.

On behalf of the people of New Bussa, the Emir of Borgu Kingdom, Sani Dantoro appreciated the Federal Government for the gesture saying haven sacrificed their land for the country’s power supply, they will now enjoy water supply that meets global standards as well as own the project.
