The North East Development Commission (NEDC), has commenced desilting of about One million metres of drainage, across the Six States in the North East geo-political zone of Nigeria.
In Maiduguri metropolis in Borno State alone, it has done between 250,000 to 350,000 metres of drainage, which it intends to replicate in all the othe State of the region
NEDC says, desilting the drainages is a way to control or mitigate flood, as well as create jobs as those engaged in the desilting are the youths, who are additionally being empowered in the process.
“So the idea is to improve sanitation, hygiene and incase there is a flood, damage will be minimised.”
The Commission also plans to create dump sites, and in the long run, establish recycling plants.
The NEDC’s intervention also includes, the installation of solar street lights for security purposes, and to safeguard the people.
In the Maiduguri metropolitan area, the NEDC has done over 50 solar powered boreholes, and has brought about same in most of the Local Governments, in all the Six States in the North East.
“We have seen that solar powered boreholes is more efficient, so that is why we are constructing them.”
The NEDC adds that it is doing all, to make sure that every opportunity, is being used effectively.
