There is the urgent need to Implement measures that can help mitigate election issues in Nigeria and promote free, fair, and credible elections.
This was the consensus of the National Peace Committee at a closed-door meeting in Abuja in preparation for the Edo State governorship election scheduled to hold in September, this year.
Nigeria has faced numerous election-related challenges, including Voter suppression and intimidation, Electoral violence, Vote buying and bribery, Inadequate voter registration and verification.
As the Edo State and Ondo state governorship elections draw nearer, there is the need to ensure that issues faced in past elections do not re-occur.
The National peace committee has however come up with recommendations to tackle issues of election malpractices.
Stakeholders think promoting transparency and accountability in election administration and encouraging inclusive and diverse electoral commissions to address socio-economic issues driving electoral malpractices is key.
The peace committee thinks implementing these recommendations would usher in an era of free, fair and inclusive elections.
