Following the two confirmed cases of Mpox in Rivers, the State Government says it has put in place an incidence plan on Mpox, and has mobilised resources to track all incidents of the disease across its 23 Local Government Areas.

The Commissioner for Health, Adaeze Oreh, made this known to Journalists during a News conference in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control had recently stated that there were 39 confirmed cases of Mpox across the country, out of which Rivers State has 2 of such confirmed cases.

Following the World Health Organisation (WHO) declaration of Mpox as a public health emergency, Adaeze Oreh said the Rivers State government had already put its public health emergency operations centre on high alert to respond to further emergencies at the Primary health care level.

She noted that it will commence the tracking and surveillance of suspected cases of Mpox in communities.

The Health Commissioner also disclosed that the Ministry had engaged and trained adhoc staff to monitor and effectively combat the infection.

Mpox is a viral illness that presents with rashes of varying sizes, where an individual can also have fever, generalized body pains, weakness, among other symptoms.
