A former French Foreign Minister, Michel Barnier has been appointed as the country’s Prime Minister by President Emmanuel Macron, after results of June’s general elections produced a hung Parliament.
The 71-year old former top negotiator for the European Union on BREXIT is the oldest person ever to occupy the post in almost 50 years.
He succeeds Gabriel Attack, who is the youngest person ever in the post at 34 when appointed in January.
Barnier is a veteran French politician who has been Minister of Environment between 1993 and 1995, and that of Agriculture and Fisheries between 2007 and 2009.
He is also a veteran of European politics and had served as Commissioner for International Markets and Services from 2010 to 2014, and earlier as Commissioner for Regional Policy between 1999 and 1994.
