President Bola Tinubu has formally requested confirmation of the Senate for Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN.

The request is contained in a letter to the upper chamber read by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio at the resumption of plenary after two months of recess

President Tinubu says the request complies with the provisions of Section 231(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which gives him powers to appoint a Chief Justice of Nigeria on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, NJC and subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Justice Kekere-Ekun was sworn in on August 23, 2024, as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, pending Senate confirmation. The Senate has referred the request to the Committee of the whole for handling on the next legislative day.

Meanwhile, the President has asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of Badamasi Lawal as the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, NSIPA.

This move according to President Tinubu aligns with Section 14(1) of the National Social Investment Programme Agency Act, 2023.

In his letter to the Senate, President Tinubu expressed hope that the lawmakers would promptly consider and confirm Lawal’s nomination, given the importance of NSIPA’s role in nationwide social investment programmes.
