Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara says the major reason Nigerian professionals, especially doctors, are leaving the country is out of a desire for better welfare which is in short supply in the country.

Governor Fubara, who said this on Wednesday when he received the accreditation panel of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, described the brain drain syndrome being experienced in the country as a situation that will die naturally if doctors and other professionals working in key sectors of the nation’s economy are given what they deserve.

Led by the Registrar, the accreditation team from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria are in Port Harcourt to carry out a final accreditation of the College of Medical Sciences at the Rivers State University, ahead of the graduation of the first batch of doctors from the institution.

The accreditation team led by Fatima Kyari said the visit to Government House Port Harcourt also provides the opportunity to explore areas of collaboration, including the increase in the number of medical students to be admitted annually.

Governor Fubara says his administration will continue to provide the necessary support to make the College of Medical Sciences a centre of excellence, describing healthcare, agriculture and education is priority sectors of his administration.
