Nigerian Authorities say they will halve the 30 million almajiri and the more than 20 million out-of-school children before the end of President Bola Tinubu’s tenure.

Executive secretary of the National Commission for almajiri and out of school children education, Muhammad El-Bulature made the promises at the inauguration of an 8-man committee

tasked with unifying all tsangaya or almajiri schools’ associations for more efficient coordination.

This comment made in 2019 by the Education minister Adamu Adamu after President Muhammadu Buhari’s first tenure, was never achieved even at the end of his second tenure in 2023.

To avoid the promise and fail syndrome of the past government, President Bola Tinubu established the National Commission for almajiri and out of school children education, with a mandate to reduce by half, the now 30 million almajriri children, plus over 20 million out of school children.

With the inauguration of a committee to unify over two thousand tsangaya learning centres, the government is upbeat to surpass the dream of taking 50 % of the children off the streets by 2027.

The 8-man committee has three weeks to submit its report.
