Enugu State, which is the headquarters of South-East Nigeria, was generally calm on Tuesday as the country celebrated its 64th Independence Day Anniversary.

The planned national protest by #EndBadGovernance movement did not take place in any part of Enugu State.

However, a lively atmosphere was created by a march-past at Okpara Square in the state capital, featuring pupils and students from primary and secondary schools, adding colour to the celebration while other citizens took the opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey so far.

Governor Peter Mbah, speaking at a state banquet organised as part of the Independence Day celebration activities, urged Nigerians to remain hopeful in the face of ongoing socio-economic difficulties, stressing the importance of optimism for a better future.

In Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa also urged Nigerians to inculcate virtues that would project honour, sense of mission, purpose, national pride, sanctity and sacredness of togetherness.

Aiyedatiwa was speaking in Akure at the occasion to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.

The Governor said Nigerians must have integrity, collective heroism, undying patriotism and must refrain from escalating disruptive tendencies that portend hopelessness, despair and failure.

Aiyedatiwa, who acknowledged the reality of the harsh impacts of the transformative economic reforms, however, noted that it was important for the growth that would resonate with transformational agenda of the state.
