Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara says the Inspector General of Police should be held responsible if there is any breakdown of law and order during and after Saturday’s local government election in the state, as he accuses the police of trying to compromise the exercise.

Speaking a few hours after he helped foil an attempt by the police to invade the premises of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, Governor Fubara warns that any attempt by anyone or group to stop the election will be strongly resisted.

Few hours after he helped foil an attempt by the police to invade the premises of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission along the popular Aba Road in Port Harcourt, Governor Siminalayi Fubara briefed the media.

The governor notes that ever since the polls were announced, there have been deliberate attempts by some persons, with the tacit support of the police, to stop exercise.

Governor Fubara says his administration is only complying with the judgment of the Supreme Court directing states where local government elections have not been conducted to do so or face the consequences.

He also recalls that President Bola Tinubu had given states that were yet to comply with the judgement a window of 90 days to do so.

With other states going ahead with their elections, the governor wonders why the case of Rivers is different.

He says the election will go ahead as scheduled.

The governor wants the Inspector General of Police to be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order.

Moving on, Governor Siminalayi Fubara says his administration has put everything in place to ensure that Saturday’s local government election is free, credible and peaceful.

He, therefore, wants voters to come out in their numbers and vote for candidates of their choice.
