Illicit Vehicle Modification Causes Benin City CNG Explosion – PCNGI

The Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI) has expressed heartfelt sympathy to those injured at the NIPCO CNG Station in Ikpoba Hill, Benin City.

According to PCNGI’s Programme Director and Chief Executive, Michael Oluwagbemi, a thorough examination of the cylinder involved revealed it had been welded, modified, and was not approved for use with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

He explained that The police, regulatory authorities, and NIPCO management are conducting a detailed investigation into the incident, with PCNGI’s cooperation.

Oluwagbemi emphasized that this incident underscores the importance of the upcoming Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System.

The system, a joint effort by PCNGI and partners (SON, NMDPRA, NADDC, and FRSC), aims to identify and address bad actors in the ecosystem.

To ensure safety, Oluwagbemi urged the public to use only accredited conversion centers.

“The safer, cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable fuel source must remain risk-free for everyone,” he stressed.

It urged Stakeholders to use accredited conversion centers, Handle CNG safely, like petrol and Comply with regulations.
