Suspected gang members, on Thursday night, shot dead, a soldier attached to the Operation Delta Safe Headquarters at Igbogene, in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital.
The soldier, a Corporal and originally of the 16 Brigade, was shot few meters away from the Operation Delta Safe Headquarters by the hoodlums, who opened fire on him and zoomed off in a waiting car.
Community sources who did not wish to be mentioned said that the victim appeared to be friendly with the assailants who called him on phone, to meet them at the point where he met his untimely end
Efforts to reach the army authorities over the matter which has created apprehension in the area did not yield positive results.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Government has condemned the 20th July kidnap incident of Madam Betinah, mother to the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Konbowei Benson, by unknown gunmen.

Bayelsa State Commissioner of Information, Ayiba Duba in a statement, said that the government in collaboration with the security agencies is working around the clock to secure her release and apprehend those behind the abduction.
Duba while calling on the kidnappers to release Madam Betinah unconditionally and without injury, maintained that Bayelsa State still remains amongst the most peaceful in the country, despite the ugly incident.
