Attorney General of Enugu state condemns killing of popular Ogene musician

Enugu’s Attorney General, Kingsley Udeh, has strongly condemned the killing of popular Ogene musician Okezie Chikezie Mba, also known as Igbo Jah, by a police officer.

The police officer, identified as Inspector Joseph Ozonwanji, was part of the anti-cultism squad of the Enugu State Police Command’s Tactical Squad. He has been detained and is currently undergoing trial for the murder.

The, Attorney General, while confirming this to AIT, has assured that justice will be served expeditiously and diligently, with the Governor personally instructing him to prosecute the case.

According to Daniel Ndukwe, the Spokesman of the command, the incident occurred on October 25 around 8:10 p.m. when Igbo Jah was leaving the police command’s premises after a visit. For reasons yet to be determined, Inspector Ozonwanji fired his rifle, hitting Igbo Jah four times.

The Nigeria Police, arraigned Joseph Ozonwanji before a Chief Magistrate’s Court, following his orderly room trial and approval of his dismissal and arraignment by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in Godwin Aghaulor.

According to the charge before the magistrate court, the offence is punishable under Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2024.

According to the attorney general, Udeh, the Chief Administrative Magistrate, Enugu East Magistrate Court 1, Ngozi Edeani has ordered 
that the case file be transferred to his office while the suspect has been remanded at the Enugu Correctional Centre.
