Int'l Day of The Elderly

As Nigerians grapple with current economic challenges, some elderly persons in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital have called on governments at all levels to prioritize their welfare, as well as the provision of free healthcare services to persons in that category.

This appeal was made on Tuesday as the World celebrated the 2024 International Day of the Elderly.

The House of Chiefs in the Oyo State Assembly Parliament Complex, in Ibadan was the venue of activities to mark this year’s International Day for the Elderly, as aged men and women from across the 33 LGAs converged.

The organizers of the event said the day was set aside to honor the elderly in society who have served the State and humanity with their youthful energies in both the public and private sectors.

Earlier in a paper presentation, a Nutrition expert, urged the elders to maintain good health, especially keeping hydrated and physically fit at all times.

Some of the Elders at the event expressed concern over rising living costs and limited access to healthcare which pose great hardships on their welfare and well-being.

The event featured presentation of cheques to various beneficiaries, cultural dance display, the ‘ayo olopon’ game challenge as well as special palm wine entertainments for the elders.
