Members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, under the Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), have been assured of receiving part of their 21 month-accrued benefits and entitlements before the end of this year, Finance Minister, Wale Edun gave the assurance while addressing protesting members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Abuja on Wednesday.
At a meeting over the outstanding payments, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Sylva Nwiwu, told the gathering that the non payment of their accrued benefits has subjected pensioners to untold hardship, while many have died without enjoying the fruits of their labour, after decades of faithful service
The meeting however took a different turn when some of the pensioners staged a peaceful rally to the office of the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun where they also narrated their grievances
The minister after hearing their complaints, promised to ensure that their demands are met before the end of December 2024.
The protesters told journalists that top ranking public servants who retired from the ranks of DGs, Permanent Secretaries, Accountant Generals, Heads of service of the Federation and its equivalent have since been removed from the Contributory Pension Scheme to what is known as the Defined Benefit Scheme DBS.
